A Plethora of Sports Action at Bishop’s This Weekend
The Bishop's Gaiters are busy this weekend as they host a variety of sports on Coulter Field and in Mitchell Gymnasium. Starting on Wednesday through Sunday, 13 games by eight different teams will take place on campus plus the football team will compete in the annual Mayor's Cup at Sherbrooke.
Action gets underway at Coulter Field on Wednesday, October 10 at 8 p.m. as the men's rugby team (3-1, 13 pts.) has a rematch against the Sherbrooke Vert et Or (3-1, 14 pts.). With a win the Gaiters will leapfrog both Sherbrooke and the Concordia Stingers into first place in the RSEQ. Bishop's topped Sherbrooke 5-0 across town last Thursday.
On Thursday, October 11 the undefeated men's lacrosse team (6-0) will face Concordia (0-8). The opening whistle is set for 8:30 p.m. on Coulter Field. This is the second meeting in as many weeks between the two teams. Bishop's beat upstart Concordia 22-0 in Montreal on October 1. The defending Bagattaway Cup champions are back in action on Saturday, October 13 as the Trent Excalibur (3-3) visit Lennoxville. This will mark the last home game of the year for the purple and white. Faceoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
Friday, October 12 will see the opening of the second annual Reebok Shoot for the Cure women's basketball tournament. The Montreal Dynamo, Montreal Express and Queen's Gaels are in town. The exhibition tournament raises funds to help in the research of breast cancer. It is part of a nationwide campaign through the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The teams will play a round robin over three days. Kicking off the festivities will be the Dynamo and Express at 6 p.m. on Friday in Mitchell Gymnasium. The opening ceremony will follow and the Gaiters and Gaels will battle. On Saturday at 4 p.m. the Express and Gaels will play followed by the Gaiters and Dynamo. Wrapping up the event on Sunday at 11 a.m. will be the Gaels and Dynamo with Bishop's and the Express to follow and close out the tournament.
Also on Friday the women's soccer team (0-6-2) will face Sherbrooke (6-2-0) at 6 p.m. on Coulter Field. The Lady Gaiters are coming off a 14 day break, last competing on homecoming Friday when they fell to the UQAM Citadins (1-6-1) 1-0. Bishop's will be looking to make a late season move as this game marks the second of five in a row at home. They will lace up the cleats again on Sunday, October 14 at 1 p.m. as the UQTR Patriotes (0-6-2) are in town. The two teams played to a scoreless draw to open their seasons on September 7.
The women's rugby team (0-6) takes on the Carleton Ravens (2-4) to close out their season on Friday at 8 p.m. on Coulter Field. The Gaiters are coming off a 46-5 loss to Ottawa last Friday, while Carleton has slim playoff hopes but will need a win and help to stay alive. Bishop's has been officially eliminated from the post season.
Saturday, October 13 the football team (3-3) will travel across town to play the Vert et Or (3-3) at 1 p.m. in the annual Mayor's Cup game. This is the first and only meeting between the foes who are battling for playoff position. The Gaiters and Vert et Or are tied for third in the RSEQ as Concordia forfeited its two wins due to an ineligible player. The Redmen (2-4) and Stingers (0-6) will clash on Saturday also at 1 p.m. The Gaiters are coming off a 34-20 loss to McGill on October 4, while Sherbrooke disposed of the Stingers 48-6 on October 6.
The men's basketball squad will play an exhibition game against the American International College Yellow Jackets from Springfield, Massachusetts. Tip-off is 2 p.m. on Saturday in Mitchell Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets are part of the Northeast 10 conference of the NCAA division two.
