McGill’s three point shooting buries Gaiters
MONTREAL – The Bishop’s Gaiters women’s basketball team wrapped up the first semester of play on Thursday, November 29 in Montreal. They fell 78-46 to the McGill Martlets. With the loss the Gaiters fall to 0-3 in league play, while McGill improves to 2-2.
Bishop’s trailed the entire game. They were down 19-11 after the first and 36-25 after the second quarter.
The hosts came out of the halftime break with authority in their home opener. They outscored the Gaiters 22-9 in the third frame en route to a 58-34 lead heading into the last quarter. The Martlets did not let up in the fourth as they shot their way to a 78-46 victory.
The Martlets were on fire from behind the arc as they shot 11-20 from three point range and 41.8% overall from the floor. They were led by Marie-Pier Bastrash (Trois Rivieres, Quebec) who scored 22 points including a 6-7 performance from three point land. Francoise Charest (Quebec City) and Anneth Him-Lazarenko (Panama City, Panama) chipped in with 17 and 11 points respectively.
Bishop’s was led by Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Quebec) for the third straight game. She scored 11 points, added three steals and two assists in 34 minutes. The Gaiters were just 1-12 from three point range and shot 34.8% overall. McGill grabbed14 more rebounds and took 21 more shots than Bishop’s.
The Gaiters (0-3) will now focus on exams as the semester winds down. They are next in action at the UQAM holiday tournament where will play a trio of games starting on December 28. Follow all of the Gaiters in action at www.gaiters.ca.
