Basketball: Gaiters host Laval in final regular season home games
The Bishop’s Gaiters men’s and women’s basketball teams will play their last home games of the regular season on Wednesday, February 13 in Mitchell Gymnasium. The Laval Rouge et Or will be in town. The women will tipoff at 6 p.m. and the men will follow at 8 p.m.
The Bishop’s Gaiters women’s basketball team (0-13) will be looking to get into the win column on Wednesday night as they will play for the final time in Lennoxville this season. The Laval Rouge et Or (5-7) are fighting for playoff positioning. In three games this season the Laval has topped the Gaiters by scores of 75-50 and 50-46 in the provincial capital and 80-47 at Bishop’s before Christmas.
Laval’s Marie-Pascale Nadeau (Levis, Quebec) is the third leading scorer in the RSEQ averaging 14.9 points per game and is the top rebounder in the league with 10.3 per game. She is also the top shot blocker averaging 2.6 per game.
Bishop’s leader is Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Quebec) who is averaging 13.8 points per game, placing her fifth in the province.
The Bishop’s Gaiters men (9-4) are tied for top spot in the RSEQ with the McGill Redmen (9-4). They will host the Laval Rouge et Or (3-9) who are currently in a battle for the final playoff spot with the UQAM Citadins (4-9). The Gaiters and Rouge et Or have played a couple of memorable games to date with Bishop’s leading the season series 2-1. The Gaiters topped Laval 74-58 in November in Lennoxville and 68-65 in early January in Quebec. Laval stunned the Gaiters in Quebec 69-67 later that month.
Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ontario) leads the purple and silver averaging 14.7 points per game. That puts him fifth in the province. He also has the top field goal percentage in the league at 53.4 percent and is the best shot blocker with 29 on the year (2.2 per game). His 6.5 rebounds per game put him in sixth in the conference.
The Rouge et Or are led by Thibaud Dezutter (Namur). He is currently second in league scoring with 16.3 points per game, including 19 and 20 point performances against the Gaiters in their two most recent contests. He is also seventh in rebounding (6.3 per game) and is the best three-point shooter (12-21, 55.3 percent) in the RSEQ.
