Cavaliers Bringing Women’s Flag-Football in for 2018-19
The Athletics and Recreation Department at Champlain College Saint-Lambert is pleased to announce that they will be adding a new sport to the Cavaliers family starting this fall, with the addition of Women’s Flag-Football for the 2018-19 season. The team will be joining the RSEQ Sud-Ouest league in September of 2018.
As Flag-Football is being added, however, the Cavaliers will be placing the Women’s Rugby team on hiatus and withdrawing from the 2018-19 season.
“Over the past few years we’ve seen and had a greater demand from our students to explore the possibility of adding Flag-Football to our intercollegiate program,” said Vince Amato, Coordinator of Athletics at the College. “We looked at the demographics and saw that Flag-Football is played overwhelmingly in the high-schools in the Montérégie region, and that many of the students coming to Champlain were interested in pursuing the sport at the next level. On the other hand, however, Rugby is not very widespread here on the South Shore and we’ve had a harder time finding students with Rugby skills to play on the team.”
The challenge with Rugby currently, is the lack of a solid feeder system results in less-skilled players trying to compete at the college level. “Most of our Rugby players this year were Flag-Football players in high school and while they liked Rugby, it wasn’t their sport,” stated Amato. “It was a tough decision, knowing the history that Rugby has here at the college, but we know it’s the right call. We’ll continue to look at ways to support Rugby and push for the development of the Rugby-7s league, seeing how popular it’s become since its introduction as an Olympic sport. Here at Champlain we feel that Rugby-7s is much more sustainable and in line with our needs.”
The Cavaliers will begin the process of looking for a coach to help build the program shortly.
