Football universitaire : Jonathan Sénécal est choisi joueur par excellence

Montréal, 10 novembre 2023 - À l’occasion de la conférence de presse de la Coupe Dunsmore à l’Université de Montréal organisée par le RSEQ (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) où les meilleurs de la Ligue ont été célébrés et honorés, le quart-arrière des Carabins de l’Université de Montréal a remporté le prix individuel le plus prestigieux du football universitaire : celui de joueur par excellence de la saison 2023.

En nomination pour le trophée Hec Crighton de U SPORTS

Jonathan Sénécal a connu la meilleure saison de sa carrière universitaire en 2023. Le quart-arrière des Carabins de l’Université de Montréal a terminé au sommet de toutes les catégories statistiques à sa position au RSEQ. Sénécal a conclu la saison régulière avec 15 passes de touché, un sommet dans le RSEQ et un nouveau record d’équipe des Carabins. Le numéro 12 a cumulé 2215 verges par la passe, la deuxième meilleure récolte de l’histoire des Bleus. Sénécal a complété près de 70% de ses passes, et n’a lancé que 4 interceptions, le plus bas total parmi les quarts partants du RSEQ cette saison.

L’ancien joueur par excellence de la première division collégiale en 2018 a également 394 verges au sol, le quatrième plus haut total parmi tous les joueurs de la conférence, un sommet chez les pivots en 2023, et un nouveau record d’équipe des Carabins. L’étudiant en administration des affaires à HEC Montréal a ajouté six majeurs au sol, et aucun d’entre eux n’a été réalisé sur une faufilade du quart.

Pour la deuxième fois en trois saisons, l’ancien du Phénix du Collège André-Grasset a mené sa troupe à une fiche de sept victoires et une défaite pour terminer au premier rang de la conférence.

En nomination pour le Trophée des Présidents de U SPORTS

À sa troisième saison avec les Carabins, le secondeur Harold Miessan s’est établi comme un pilier au sein de l’unité défensive.

Sa récolte de 36 plaqués fait de lui le meneur chez les Carabins à ce chapitre. L’ancien du Cégep du Vieux-Montréal a également réalisé deux interceptions qu’il a ramenées pour un total de 20 verges et enregistré un sac du quart.

La recrue défensive par excellence du RSEQ en 2021 a ajouté un ballon échappé à son excellent curriculum vitae de la saison.

En nomination pour le trophée J.P. Metras de U SPORTS

Christopher Fontenard est nommé joueur de ligne de l’année au terme d’une saison régulière dominante au cours de laquelle il a passé ses journées dans le champ-arrière adverse. Le joueur de ligne défensive d’origine française a effectué 20 plaqués, dont 4 pour une perte de terrain. Il a ajouté 2,5 sacs du quart, à égalité au troisième rang de la conférence. L’ancien des Filons du Cégep de Thetford a également rabattu une passe et récupéré un échappé.

En nomination pour le trophée Peter Gorman de U SPORTS

Joueur défensif des deux dernières campagnes au niveau collégial, Justin Cloutier a eu un impact immédiat sur la défensive du Rouge et Or cette saison. En sept matchs, Cloutier a réussi 28,5 plaqués, dont 22 en solo, le neuvième plus haut total parmi tous les joueurs défensifs au RSEQ et le deuxième au sein du Rouge et Or. Parmi ces plaqués, il a notamment réussi un sac du quart.

De retour à Québec après un passage à Williston Northampton School, Maxime-Olivier Cabana s’est rapidement imposé comme un joueur important de la ligne offensive du Rouge et Or. À sa première saison à Québec, l’étudiant en Droit de 20 ans a disputé tous les matchs des siens, en plus d’agir comme partant à six reprises.

À sa première saison avec le Rouge et Or, Jordan Lessard a été tout simplement spectaculaire pour la défensive du Rouge et Or. En huit matchs cette saison, l’ancien des Islanders du Collège John Abbott a réussi quatre interceptions, un sommet au RSEQ. Il a également accumulé 20,5 plaqués, dont un impressionnant total de 19 en solo. Il a également défendu avec succès cinq passes, le deuxième plus haut total au sein du Rouge et Or.

ROUGE ET OR DE L’UNIVERSITÉ LAVAL

Vincent Blanchard a frôlé la perfection cette saison en réussissant 18 de ses 19 bottés de placement. Son pourcentage d’efficacité de 94,7% est le meilleur au Québec et au Canada cette saison et le deuxième plus haut dans l’histoire du RSEQ. Le 23 septembre dernier, il a notamment connu une soirée parfaite de 5 placements réussis en autant de tentatives. Le botteur de 25 ans a également maintenu une moyenne de 41,1 verges sur ses 51 bottés de dégagement.

STINGERS DE L’UNIVERSITÉ CONCORDIA

En nomination pour le prix Gino Fracas de Football Canada et U SPORTS

Émilie fait partie du programme des Stingers depuis deux ans. Au cours de cette période, elle a aidé avec les unités spéciales et a fait partie intégrante du personnel. Elle a rapidement gagné le respect des joueurs par ses connaissances et son assurance sur le terrain. Son souci du détail est sans égal et le nombre d'heures qu'elle consacre est comparable à celui d'un entraîneur à temps plein. Elle concilie son emploi du temps chargé de footballeuse avec celui de policière à plein temps dans la région de Montréal. Elle n'a jamais recherché la reconnaissance ou le rayonnement d'être une femme entraîneur au niveau universitaire, elle voulait être acceptée pour son éthique de travail et sa connaissance du jeu. Son dévouement au programme a aidé les Stingers à devenir l'une des meilleures unités spéciales du RSEQ et de U SPORTS.

En nomination pour le trophée Frank Tindall de U SPORTS

À sa troisième saison à la barre des Carabins, Marco Iadeluca remporte le titre d’entraîneur-chef de l’année pour une deuxième fois. Le pilote des Bleus a mené les siens vers une excellente fiche de sept victoires contre un seul revers, ce qui leur a permis de terminer au premier rang du classement général de la saison régulière.

Il s’agit du quatrième titre de saison régulière dans l’histoire des Carabins.

COUPE DUNSMORE

Rappelons que la finale de la Coupe Dunsmore aura lieu le samedi 11 novembre. Le duel entre le Rouge et Or de l’Université Laval et les Carabins de l’Université de Montréal débutera dès 14 h et sera présenté sur les ondes de TVA Sports.

Montreal, Friday, November 10, 2023 - The RSEQ (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) today announced its major award winners for the 2023 RSEQ University Football season. Jonathan Sénécal, from the Montréal Carabins, took top honours as Most Valuable Player.

OUTSTANDING PLAYER OF THE YEAR – JEFF RUSSEL TROPHY

Nominated for the U SPORTS Hec Crighton Trophy

Jonathan Sénécal enjoyed the best season of his university career in 2023. The Université de Montréal Carabins quarterback finished at the top of all statistical categories at his position in the RSEQ. Sénécal concluded the regular season with 15 touchdown passes, an RSEQ record and a new Carabins team record. Number 12 accumulated 2,215 passing yards, the second-highest total in Les Bleus history. Sénécal completed nearly 70% of his passes, and threw just 4 interceptions, the lowest total among RSEQ starting quarterbacks this season.

The former CÉGEP Division I Most Valuable Player in 2018 also ran for 394 yards on the ground, the fourth-highest total among all players in the conference, a high among pivots in 2023 and a new Carabins team record. The HEC Montréal business administration student added six majors on the ground, none of which came on a quarterback sneak.

For the second time in three seasons, the Collège André-Grasset Phénix alumnus led his team to a record of seven wins and one loss to finish first in the conference.

Nominated for the U SPORTS President’s Trophy

In his third season with the Carabins, linebacker Harold Miessan has established himself as a pillar of the defensive unit. His 36 tackles makes him the Carabins' leader in this regard. The Cégep du Vieux-Montréal alumnus also returned two interceptions for a total of 20 yards and recorded a quarterback sack.

The RSEQ's defensive rookie of the year in 2021 added a forced fumble to his excellent resume this season.

Nominated for the U SPORTS J.P. Metras Trophy

Christopher Fontenard is the RSEQ Lineman of the Year after a dominant regular season in which he spent a lot of time in the opposing backfield. The French-born defensive lineman had 20 tackles, including 4 for a loss. He added 2.5 quarterback sacks, tied for third in the conference. The Cégep de Thetford alumnus also picked off a pass and recovered a fumble.

Nominated for the U SPORTS Peter Gorman Trophy

Defensive player for the past two CÉGEP campaigns, Justin Cloutier has had an immediate impact on the Rouge et Or's defense this season. In seven games, Cloutier made 28.5 tackles, including 22 solo, the ninth-highest total among all defensive players in the RSEQ and the second-highest among Rouge et Or players. His tackles included a quarterback sack.

Returning to Quebec City after a stint at Williston Northampton School, Maxime-Olivier Cabana quickly established himself as an important player on the Rouge et Or offensive line. In his first season in Quebec City, the 20-year-old law student played in every game for his team, in addition to starting six games.

In his first season with the Rouge et Or, Jordan Lessard has been nothing short of spectacular for the Rouge et Or’s defense. In eight games this season, the John Abbott College alumnus managed an RSEQ-high four interceptions. He also racked up 20.5 tackles, including an impressive 19 solo. He also successfully broken five passes, the second-highest total on the Rouge et Or.

Vincent Blanchard came close to perfection this season, making 18 of his 19 field goals. His 94.7% efficiency percentage is the best in Quebec and Canada this season, and the second highest in RSEQ history. On September 23rd, he had a perfect night with 5 made field goals in as many attempts. The 25-year-old kicker also maintained an average of 41.1 yards on his 51 punts.

CONCORDIA STINGERS

Nominated for the U SPORTS and Football Canada Gino Fracas Award

Émilie has been part of the Stingers program for the past two years. During this time, she has helped with special teams and has been an integral part of the staff. She quickly earned the respect of the players by her knowledge and assertiveness on the field. Her attention to detail is second to none and the number of hours she puts in is comparable to a full-time coach. She balances the hectic football schedule while also being a full-time police officer in the Montreal area. She never wanted the recognition or press of being a female coach at the university level, she wanted to be accepted for her work ethic and knowledge of the game. Her dedication to the program has helped us become one of the better special teams groups in the RSEQ and U SPORTS.

Nominated for U SPORTS Frank Tindall Trophy

In his third season at the helm of the Carabins, Marco Iadeluca wins the title of Head Coach of the Year for a second time. Iadeluca led his team to an excellent record of seven wins against just one loss, which enabled them to finish first overall in the regular season standings. This is the fourth regular-season title in Carabins history.

Please note that the Dunsmore Cup Final will be played Saturday, November 11. The battle between the Laval Rouge et Or and the Montreal Carabins is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. kick-off and will be broadcasted on TVA Sports.
