Golf | Latter's Albatross Highlight of UQAC Invitational
The Bishop’s Gaiters golf squads wrapped up the opening tournament of the 2013 RSEQ University golf season with the men sitting in 12th place and the women in third. The two-day tournament was hosted by UQAC at Club de Golf Chicoutimi on Monday and Tuesday.
Day one was thrilling as Gaiters veteran Scott Latter (Toronto) made an albatross on the par-5 fourth hole. The extremely rare feat was the first of his career and had the golf course buzzing with excitement. He finished the day by shooting score of one-over, 73. He backed that up with a 78 on day two. His two-day total has him in 20th position with two tournaments remaining. The men as a whole struggled on day two as the only other Gaiter to break 80 was rookie Spencer Richmond (Perth, Ont.) who was competing as an individual. He currently sits in a tie for 45th. The Gaiters as a team finished at plus-58 and are in 12th place.
The women were once again led by Shannon Lee Greenshields (Pincourt, Que.). She shot an opening round 77 and backed that up with an 83 on day two. She is in a tie for sixth place. One of the lone bright spots for the purple and silver on day two was the play of Lindsay Reid (Montreal). She fired her university career best 81, an improvement of 10 shots from day one. The Lady Gaiters were just one of three full teams competing and sit in third place after the first tournament.
“I think we played some good golf,” said coach Marty Rourke. “We obviously had some holes we’d like to forget but I think we can learn from our mistakes and improve for Blainville. There were definitely some bright spots and Scott’s albatross was really exciting. He was definitely was our player of the tournament.”
The Gaiters will now turn to the practice range as they prepare for the second of three RSEQ University tournaments. It is set to be hosted by the Concordia Stingers at Club de Golf Le Blainvillier on Septermber 22-23. Follow the Gaiters as the look to swing into contention at the new-look www.gaiters.ca.
