MARTLETS MARCH PAST GAITERS IN MATINEE ON THE HARDWOOD
The nation’s top team, the McGill Martlets rolled past the Bishop’s Gaiters 70-36 in RSEQ University basketball on Saturday afternoon in Montreal. Argentinian Mara Marchizotti led Bishop’s with nine points in the losing cause.
Saturday’s contest featured David against Goliath and Bishop’s was unable to pull off the upset. With the victory the No.1 Martlets, who had already wrapped up top spot in the RSEQ, improve to 14-1 on the season. They will host the RSEQ Four-4 from March 10-12 with aspirations to be crowned conference champion for the fourth consecutive year.
The loss drops Bishop’s to 0-15 on the year.
Marchizotti, who hails from Buenos Aires, netted nine points and grabbed six rebounds including three at the offensive end in the loss. The 6’4 centre also had an assist in 31 minutes on the floor.
The Gaiters as a team fired just 14-55 from the floor good for 25.5 percent. That included a 3-18 performance from behind the arc. They were also out-rebounded by the Martlets 48-30.
After a close first stanza, McGill led 17-13, the Martlets turned it on. They held Bishop’s to just nine points over the next 20 minutes of game time. The hosts held a 36-17 lead at halftime and a 50-22 advantage heading into the last quarter before winning the final frame and securing a 70-36 win.
McGill’s Alexandra Kiss-Rusk led all scorers with 18 points while Myriam Sylla recorded a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Bishop’s will wrap up the 2015-16 campaign on Thursday in Quebec City when they take on the Laval Rouge et Or (8-7) at 6 p.m.
