WBB: Gaiters Fall To Laval In Last Home Game Of Semester

The Bishop’s Gaiters women’s basketball team fell 80-47 to the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday. The Gaiters trailed the entire game but were within striking distance at the half. Laval went onto outscore Bishop’s 44-19 after the break as they cruised to victory.
The Gaiters (0-2) got off to a slow start. They spotted Laval (1-3) a 10-0 lead to open the game before starting to climb their way out of the hole. The Gaiters Sabrina Asselin (Repentigny, Quebec) knocked down a three pointer as time expired in the first quarter cutting Laval’s lead to 22-16.
Bishop’s was able to get within four points early in the second frame before Laval started to pull away thanks in part to some key offensive rebounds and second chance points. The Gaiters tried to make runs but Laval seemed to have an answer each time. Bishop’s trailed 36-28 at halftime.
Laval came out of the break on fire. They scored 19 third quarter points to the Gaiters nine and grabbed control of the contest. In the fourth quarter it was much of the same as Laval outscored the hosts 25-10 en route to an 80-47 victory.
Marie-Pascale Nadeau (Levis, Quebec) led the way for Laval with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Gabrielle Girard (Saguenay, Quebec) added 17 points while Melodie Laniel-Dion (Quebec) and Elyse Jobin (Moncton) each had 10.
The Gaiters were once again led by Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Quebec) who scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Asselin finished with a solid 13 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
As a team Laval shot 43.1 percent from the floor to the Gaiters 24.6 percent. The Rouge et Or also attempted 15 more shots than Bishop’s and had six fewer turnovers.
