Gaiters and Citadins wrap up a home and home series on the hardwood

SHERBROOKE, QC – The Bishop’s Gaiters basketball teams will wrap up a home and home series with the UQAM Citadins on Wednesday, January 9. The teams tipped off in Montreal on Sunday night with the UQAM women and Bishop’s men coming out on top. Wednesday’s games will take place in Mitchell Gymnasium on the Bishop’s University campus with the women starting at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.
The Bishop’s Gaiters women (0-4) struggled to find their scoring touch on Sunday. The Citadins pulled away early and eventually won 76-50. The Gaiters were led by Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke) who scored 19 points in a losing cause, including an 11-16 performance from the free throw line. Chamberland is averaging 15 points per game, placing her fourth in the league. She also leads the league in free throws having attempted 42.
UQAM (4-1) boasts the league’s top scorer in Emie Simard (Varennes, Quebec). She is averaging 17.3 points per game however did not play in Sunday’s contest. The Citadins currently sit tied atop the RSEQ standings with the Concordia Stingers.
The Bishop’s Gaiters men’s team (3-1) is on a three game league winning streak and a six game overall win streak as they posted a perfect 3-0 record at the UQAM Holiday Classic. On Sunday they snuck out a 68-66 victory over the Citadins despite holding a lead as large as 13 points in the third frame. Fifth year captain Tim Hunter (Baie D’urfe, Quebec) led the way for Bishop’s with 16 points while Jeremy Leonard-Smith (Ottawa) and Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ontario) each chipped in with 12. Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ontario) had three blocks, bringing his league lead to 14.
The Citadins (1-4) are led by RSEQ leading scorer Gregory St-Amand (Laval, Quebec) who averages 17.2 points per game. He netted 11 points and added 10 rebounds on Sunday.
Bishop’s currently sits tied atop the RSEQ standing with the McGill Redmen at 3-1. The Concordia Stingers (3-2) are also up there but have played one more game than their foes. The Gaiters defeated the Redmen in Montreal to close out the first semester.
Wednesday’s game marks the first of four straight hump days the Gaiters will play in Mitchell Gymnasium. Both the men’s and women’s games can be viewed live on SSN Canada.
