Gaiters Get Involved With The Lennoxville Community
The Bishop’s Gaiters men’s basketball team stepped off the hardwood and picked up grocery bags on Saturday, December 15. In the spirit of the holiday season the Gaiters volunteered their time at Provigo in Lennoxville bagging groceries and collecting donations for the Alexander Galt Christmas Basket Program.
This event was an idea of former Gaiters assistant coach Charles Kobelt in 2008 and has happened every year since. It is spearheaded and organized by the players. This year they raised $625.
“It is a fantastic charity,” said Gaiters head coach Rod Gilpin. “The guys really take this on themselves. They love getting out there and helping in the community, especially at this time of year.”
The Gaiters holiday spirit does not stop there as they will be joined by the women’s basketball team on Saturday, January 5th for the second annual“Meet the Gaiters”event. It will take place in the newly renovated Mitchell Gymnasium starting at 11 a.m. The players will put on a short basketball clinic for the youth of the area as well as sign autographs and be available for pictures. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge.
On the court the Gaiters men’s and women’s teams will compete in the UQAM Holiday Classic starting on December 28. Each team will play a trio of exhibition games as they work off their turkey legs. Follow the Gaiters anytime at www.gaiters.ca.
