GAITERS PUT OUT FIRE TO BEAT STINGERS
The Gaiters men’s basketball squad (4-10) kept their RSEQ playoff dreams alive with a 74-66 win over the Concordia Stingers (9-6).
Concordia opened the game shooting and held the Gaiters to 18 points compared to their 33 in the first frame. Bishop’s found their footing in the second frame bringing the Stingers halftime lead to 44-37. The Gaiters continued their comeback in the third quarter with Peter Weston (Quebec City) scoring nine of his 12 points in the quarter.
After a short break at the beginning of the fourth quarter due to a fire alarm the game resumed. Bishop’s and Concordia traded the lead till the Gaiters pulled ahead with over three minutes to play. Montreal native, Abdul Kamane solidified the win with a lay-up with 50 seconds to play and put Bishop’s up by six. Bishop’s won 74-66 over the Stingers.
In his senior night, Jona Bermillo (Montreal) led the Gaiters with 14 points and had six rebounds. Rookie Duncan Lambert from Kingston, Ont. had a career high in the purple and silver with 13 points. In the hunt for RSEQ Rookie of the Year, Kamane had 12 points and seven rebounds.
For the Stingers, Schneiders Suffrard (Montreal) led the team with 13 points and seven rebounds in 36 minutes on the floor. Inti Salinas (Tuscon, Arizona) had 12 points.
Bishop’s will be in Montreal on Saturday, Feb. 27 to play the No. 8 McGill Redmen at 4 p.m.
