Gaiters and Citadins Split a Pair on the Hardwood
The Bishop’s University basketball teams took to the court on Wednesday night against UQAM in Mitchell Gymnasium. The women fell 60-43 while the men won 84-60 in commanding fashion.
Wednesday’s Lady Gaiters game was controlled by a fierce UQAM team. The Gaiters kept up with the Citadins in the first quarter but UQAM dominated the second, outscoring the Gaiters 22-8 for a 31-20 halftime lead. The Gaiters eventually found their scoring touch in the fourth quarter winning it 14-7 and bringing the final score to 60-43. The foul situation helped neither team as there were 41 total fouls called on the night.
Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Quebec) was the Gaiters high scorer contributing 10 points and making seven out of the Gaiters 13 free throws. Gaiters freshman Haley Lewis (Ottawa) scored a strong seven points. Emie Simard (Varennes, Quebec), current RESQ leading scorer earned 24 points and had eight rebounds for the Citadins. Valerie Gauvin (Longueuil, Quebec) helped out with 15 points and four rebounds.
The Gaiters men’s basketball team came out strong with nine unanswered points. They continued to dominate and took an 18 point lead at the half.
Bishop’s continued to control the pace taking the third quarter 21-17 and the fourth 16-14 on their way to an 84-60 victory.
The Gaiters out rebounded UQAM 48-33 and had eight blocks to the Citadins two.
Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ontario) owned the court before fouling out with 20 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Jonathan Bermillo (Montreal) added 18 to the Gaiters total along with six rebounds and five assists. Jamil Abiad (Ottawa) drained a pair of three pointers on his way to scoring 10 points. For UQAM Alexandre Bernard (Gatineau, Quebec) finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Philippe Tamba (Quebec City) added 11 points and seven boards.
This was the third time the Gaiters and UQAM faced each other this year. The Gaiters win brings the series to 3-0 in favour of them.
The Gaiters will travel to Quebec City to face the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday. The women tip off at 5 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m. Get all your Bishop’s sports information at www.gaiters.ca.
