Gaiters Host UQAM Wednesday Night in Mitchell Gymnasium

The Bishop’s Gaiters men’s and women’s basketball teams are once again home for a mid-week game. The UQAM Citadins will travel to Lennoxville on Wednesday, January 23 to face the Gaiters. The women play at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
Wednesday’s women’s match-up will be the third this year between Bishop’s (0-8) and the Citadins (6-3). UQAM has had the Gaiters number in the previous two. Bishop’s fell 76-50 in Montreal on January 6. That was followed up with a 66-55 loss in Mitchell Gym just three days later. The Gaiters Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Quebec) scored 19 and 11 points respectively in the two contests, while Riley Shkimba (Kingston, Ontario) paced Bishop’s with 16 points in the second game. The Citadins were led by Valerie Gauvin (Longueuil, Quebec) who scored 14 and 16 points in the two match-ups.
Bishop’s is coming off arguably their best half of basketball where they outscored the Concordia Stingers (6-2) 29-21 on Saturday in Montreal. Unfortunately a 41-25 halftime deficit was too large for the Gaiters to finish off a comeback.
The Bishop’s Gaiters men’s team (5-3) is on a two game losing streak after winning five in a row. They have dropped contests to the McGill Redmen (6-2), last Wednesday in Mitchell Gym and the Concordia Stingers (5-3) on Saturday in Montreal. The pair of losses has knocked the Gaiters out of first place in the conference and out of the top-10 in Canada. Last week they were ranked ninth.
The Gaiters and UQAM Citadins (3-6) have played a pair of games this season and Bishop’s has won both. On January 6 in Montreal it was Bishop’s sneaking away with a 68-66 win. They followed that up three days later with a 69-58 victory in Mitchell Gymnasium. Tim Hunter (Baie D’urfe, Quebec), Jeremy Leonard-Smith (Ottawa) and Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ontario) all scored in double figures in both games for Bishop’s. Gregory St-Amand (Laval, Quebec) scored 17 and 13 points respectively for UQAM but left the second game after playing just 15 minutes due to injury.
The Bishop’s men will look to lock up the season series with UQAM on Wednesday night in Mitchell Gymnasium while the Gaiters women hope to avoid a similar fate. The women’s game will tip off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m. Both games will be webcast live on SSN Canada. Get all of your Gaiters news and information at www.gaiters.ca.
