Gaiters men win big at winter homecoming
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon of winter homecoming the Bishop’s Gaiters faced off against the Concordia Stingers. The senior’s game was postponed from Friday night due to inclement weather. With alumni and family in the stands the Lady Gaiters lost a well-fought game 69-45 and the men won 84-71.
The Lady Gaiters started off the game with a four-minute drought that was broken with a three from Riley Shkimba (Kingston, Ontario). The Gaiters and Stingers kept the score close but Concordia dropped two threes to take the first quarter 18-12. Strong shooting kept the Lady Gaiters within reach. The halftime score was 33-23 Stingers. The Gaiters shots failed to fall in the third quarter and they lost it 22-7 as Concordia extended their lead to 55-30. Bishop’s fought back in the fourth to win the quarter 15-14 but it was not enough to win the game as Concordia took it 69-45.
The leading scorer for Bishop’s was Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Quebec). In her senior game at Mitchell Gymnasium she scored 11 points. Shkimba had 10 points and Catherine Rondeau (Sherbrooke) had 10 rebounds. The Stingers leading scorer was Marilyse Roy-Viau (Mirabel, Quebec) with 20 points and six rebounds. Alex Bondreau (Saguenay, Quebec) contributed 12 points.
The Gaiters men got off to a slow start but came back quickly to take the first quarter 23-19.
The second quarter was closely contested leaving the halftime score at 37-35 in favour of the hosts. Strong scoring by senior Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfe, Quebec) helped the Gaiters grab the momentum and take a seven-point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Gaiters won the game 84-71. Bishop’s shot for 50 percent in the contest.
Top scorer for Bishop’s was Jeremy Leonard-Smith (Ottawa) with 23 points and six rebounds. Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ontario) added 20 points and 10 rebounds and Scott Ring (Ottawa) chipped in with 12 points and eight assists. The leading scorer for the Stingers was Evens Laroche (Montreal) with 22 points and seven rebounds. Kyle Desmarais (Montreal) and Jerome Blake (Montreal) each contributed 15 points for the Stingers.
“We had a very balanced attack with five players in double digits,” said head coach Rod Gilpin. “Mike Andrews played very well. We have a must win game this Wednesday when we host Laval.”
