Suchorski tallies 19 points as rugby Martlets bury Bishop's

Caroline Suchorski scored 19 points while Emily Barber of Fenlon Falls, Ont., and Katrine Lightstone of Ottawa added three tries apiece as visiting McGill buried Bishop's 69-12 in women's rugby during Bishop's Homecoming Week at Coulter Field, Friday.
"Our team took a step forward this week," said Martlets head coach Matt Stephens, whose troops finally snapped a three-game losing streak. "We were more aggressive and had better structure in attack. We will need to continue to build on the improvements if we want to compete with the top teams in this league."
Suchorski, who hails from Kirkland, Que., scored one try and converted seven others as she moved into second place among the league's scoring leaders with 60 -- on four tries and 17 conversions -- in five games. The 22-year-old science senior who majors in dietetics, trails Laval's Anne-Charlotte Beaulieu by 11 points.
The Martlets (2-3-0) moved into a tie with Montreal (2-2-0) for the fourth and final playoff berth in the eight-team RSEQ conference. Rounding out the scoring for McGill, with one try apiece, was Bianca Della Porta of Dorval, Que., Emily Lai of Ottawa, Alexandra Robb of Sherbrooke and Cassandra Walmsley of Fort MacLeod, Alta.
Scoring majors for the Gaiters was Mercedes Liedtke and one team try that was awarded after McGill's Erica Saabas was issued a yellow card. Stephanie Taveras-Dagenais added one conversion.
Two games remain for McGill in their hunt for a playoff berth. The Martlets will host the Montreal Carabins at Molson Stadium on Oct. 4 (1 pm) in a critical matchup that will likely decide the final post-season spot in the Quebec league. It will mark the first time this season that the Martlets will be playing at the downtown campus as they normally host their home contests at McEwen Field on McGill's Macdonald campus in suburban Ste. Anne de Bellevue. The Martlets are 2-0 lifetime against the Carabins, including a 67-0 whitewash in their inaugural meeting in 2012 at Ste. Anne de Bellevue and a 35-12 victory at Stade CEPSUM last year.
