A variety of emotions for Gaiters on friday night
SHERBROOKE, QC - The Bishop's Gaiters split their Friday doubleheader on Coulter Field. The women's soccer team fell 4-0 to the Concordia Stingers while the men's rugby squad topped the Montreal Carabins 44-5. On Thursday night in Montreal the Gaiters lacrosse squad lost 12-10 to the McGill Redmen.
The weather was rainy and windy with downpours at times as the Concordia Stingers (5-3-3) and Bishop's Gaiters (0-9-2) women's soccer teams met on Coulter Field on Friday night. The teams exchanged chances in the first half but nothing more as the score at the break was 0-0.
Concordia made adjustments as the wind picked up to start the second half. The Stingers found the back of the net in the 50th and 58th minutes jumping out to a 2-0 lead. They were awarded a penalty kick after a Bishop's hand ball in the box and Jennifer Duff (Moncton, New Brunswick) converted for a 3-0 lead. Duff also scored the opening goal of the game and finished off her hat trick in injury time. The tally gave Concordia a 4-0 win. In nets for Bishop's was Molly Bucholtz (Peterborough, Ontario) who made 11 saves and stood strong on many occasions.
The Lady Gaiters are back in action on Sunday, October 21 for their last home game of the year. The Laval Rouge et Or (6-3-2) will be in town for the 1 p.m. start.
Mother Nature did not let up for the men's rugby game that took place in the back end of the double header. The Gaiters (5-1, 22 points) dominated from the start against the upstart Montreal Carabins (1-5, 4 points). Andrew Jamieson (Montreal) got the hosts off on the right foot as he scored the first try less than a minute into the game. Gaiters captain Noah Harrison (Toronto) had one of his best games scoring three tries before being substituted for in the second half. Keegan Irwin (Toronto), Louis Hinshelwood (Kilbride, Ontario) and Will Combaluzier (Toronto) scored the other tries for Bishop's. Nicolas Alexandre (Bordeaux, France) kicked three conversions and added a penalty to round out the scoring.
With the victory and a bonus point for scoring more than four tries, Bishop's is in first place in the RSEQ, four points ahead of the Concordia Stingers. The Gaiters have wrapped up their home schedule for the regular season. Next up they travel to Montreal on Friday, October 26 to face the McGill Redmen. Game time is set for 9 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium.
On Thursday night the men's lacrosse team (7-1-1-0) traveled to Montreal for a match-up with the McGill Redmen. The Redmen (8-1) topped the Gaiters 12-10 to avenge their loss from earlier in the season. McGill's win clinched first place and ended the Gaiters undefeated season. A slow start proved costly for the purple and white as they were never able to dig themselves out of a 5-1 first quarter hole. Alex Henderson (Enniskillen, Ontario) scored four times and added an assist in the losing cause. The Gaiters close out the regular season on Saturday, October 20 in Ottawa as they face the Carleton Ravens (2-1-5-0). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
