Gaiters heat up San Diego
Bishop's University

The Bishop's Lady Gaiters soccer team got their season rolling in a different fashion this year as they travelled to San Diego for a week long training camp. The Aug. 12 to18 team bonding trip also saw the women play two games while in the golden state, where they won both.
The itinerary was easy to follow as the team would wake up, train in the morning and have the afternoons to enjoy the west coast and get to know one another. The team fundraised for the better part of a year in order to partake in the trip and it paid off according to head coach Phil Ribaux.
"Everything went as planned," he said. "We only had one injury
and it was not serious. This is something I would like to do
every couple of years. We clearly came back with stronger team
chemistry and there is an awesome atmosphere as we head into the
local part of training camp."
The Gaiters took on San Diego Christian College in their first
game. They struggled early but regrouped and controlled the
final 70 minutes. Third year keeper Molly Buchultz
(Peterborough, ON) stood between the pipes for the 4-1
victory. Fourth year forward Stephanie Burnette (Durham, CT)
scored twice, while rookies Aquila Henry (Richmond Hill, ON) and
Brett McCavour (Truro, NS) each added a goal of their
own.
The Gaiters faced Grossmont College in the second of two
games. The purple and white were ready from the start and
dominated the majority of the match. With second year goalie
Marie-Pierre Harvey (Quebec City) in net, Bishop's shut out the
hosts 3-0. They won the ball possession battle by a 70-30
margin while Burnette, Henry and second year midfielder Patricia
Murray (Sydney, NS) found the back of the net.
"Our physical play was very strong," said Ribaux. "We are not
the tallest team but we are powerful. Our rookies lived up to
their expectations; we are really looking forward to the RSEQ
season."
The Gaiters now return to training camp on the Bishop's
campus. They have three more pre-season games, Friday, Aug. 24
against St. Lawrence College, Saturday, Aug. 25 at Champlain St.
Lambert and Sunday, Aug. 26 against UOIT. They will start the
regular season on Friday, Sept. 7 in Trois Rivieres, QC against
UQTR. Stay up-to-date with Lady Gaiters soccer and all Bishop's
