Soccer Martlets to open RSEQ season Aug. 28 vs Gaiters

MONTREAL -- The McGill University women's soccer team is set to begin their regular season schedule on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 28, when they play host to the Bishop's Gaiters at 3 p.m. in Percival Molson Stadium, located at 475 Pine Avenue West.
The Martlets own a 53-0-2 lifetime record in outdoor play against the Gaiters since they joined the Quebec conference in 1992. The last time that BU took a point off McGill was a 1-1 draw in Lennoxville, Oct. 22, 2017. The only other tie was a 0-0 result on Sept. 16, 2007.
The Martlets, who went 2-1 in preseason play this month, are coming off an 8-4-2 fourth-place finish in the eight-team RSEQ conference last season. In the playoffs, they succumbed 3-2 on penalty-kicks to the league champion Montreal Carabins (10-0).
Head coach Jose-Luis Valdes returns for his seventh year as bench boss and he has a lineup with a good mix of veterans and youth. The 2019 roster features three seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores and nine freshman. The geographical breakdown includes 12 Quebec natives, five from British Columbia, four from Ontario, on Albertan and an American from Pennsylvania.
This year's squad will be feature three co-captains, including injured defender Tia Lore of Richmond, B.C., junior forward Ariane Ducharme of Notre Dame des Prairies, Que., and Nathalie Brunelle, a senior defender from Montreal.
Losses to graduation include Natasha Tcheki-Jamgotchian, Claudia Agozzino, Olivia Lusterio-Adler, Sophie Barlos, Stefania Folino, Sarah-Maude Bouchard-Canuel and goalkeeper Sarah Dubois.
