Katy Germain '10, a member of the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team from 2006-11, has signed a professional contract with TSV Towers Speyer-Schifferstadt of the 2.Bundesliga, the German second division, through the end of the 2011-12 season.
The native of Val d'Or, Que., and former Cégep de Sherbrooke Volontaire, spent five seasons with the Gaiters and was named the Bishop's University Female Athlete of the Year in 2010. Germain was a three-year starter for the Gaiters and was named a Quebec University Basketball League First Team All-Star in 2009 and 2010. She finished her career with 707 points in 79 league games, a field goal percentage of 0.342 and a three-point shooting percentage of 0.316.
Germain made her professional debut on January 22, scoring two points and picking up two rebounds in 13 minutes as Speyer lost, 62-59, to TSV Amicitia Viernheim. The Towers are currently 5-7 in the 2.Bundesliga South Division, with eight games remaining in their schedule. Germain is the second Canadian on the team, as she joins Kathryn Verboom, who played with the Lakehead Thunderwolves of the OUA.
Germain is the first Gaiter women's basketball player to play professionally since Melissa Lemay, who played in the French league until 2008.
Germain's next game is scheduled for January 29 when Speyer takes on Gruner Stern Keltern.
The current Gaiters return to action on Friday, January 27, as they host the Concordia Stingers. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the Mitchell Gym, and men's basketball Gaiters-Stingers matchup will follow at 8 p.m.
